Simon Charles is a composer and sound artist whose work is compelled by the relational dynamic between sound and listener. His work is concerned with the frameworks through which to consider the transmission of sound as an artifact, and the corruption of that transmission as it enters an acoustic space, another cultural context, or the phenomenal experience of a listener.

He has performed at Serralvés Festival (Porto), The Wulf (Los Angeles) Studio Rotor (Berlin), Vigeland Mausoleum (Oslo), Avantwhatever Festival (Melbourne), DATA (Marseille), Cool Change Contemporary (Perth), MONA (Tasmania) ANAM Quarttethaus and the Melbourne Recital Centre, with collaborators including poet, Jessica Wilkinson, Manfred Werder, Jim Denley, Nick Ashwood, Arek Gulbenkoglu, Warren Burt, Rebecca Lane, Callum G’Froerer, Josten Myburgh and the Phonetic Orchestra. Commissions include pieces for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Arko Symphonic Project, Speak Percussion, Jessica Azsodi, Lizzy Welsh, Sarah Curro and Jessica Wilkinson. He has also been commissioned as a sound-designer for several interdisciplinary projects, including dance productions by Alisdair MacIndoe, Josh Pether, and Rennie McDougall, and installation works by Katie West.

acknowledgements

I would like to acknowledge the Noongar Ballardong people, on whose country I live, work and learn from. Indigenous sovereignty was never ceded, and colonisation continues to impact first nations peoples. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

I would also like to acknowledge my mentors; Antoine Beuger, Peter Ablinger, Anthony Pateras, Ros Bandt, Warren Burt, Brenton Broadstock, and Jim Denley.
